So many new parents feel completely overwhelmed when it comes time to create their baby registry. What do you actually need? Which items are worth it? Which items are not? Is there a right or wrong way to do a registry? The short answer to that last one is no- every registry will look different based on the parents lifestyle and priorities. There is technically no “wrong” way to make a registry….BUT there are definitely some things you an do to maximize the benefits of your registry! Here are my top tips for baby registries in 2025.
Tip #1: Choose a universal registry
Universal registries have become much more commonplace in recent years, but many parents still don’t take advantage of them! The ability to choose items from various stores helps ensure you get the things you really, truly want and can also be more cost-effective for any friends and family who wish to purchase from your registry. Babylist is currently the most popular universal registry service and the one I’ve used for both of my kids! My fave feature? They will list every store your item can be found at and include the prices for each.
Tips #2: Register at multiple stores
You heard me right. Most stores offer a free or low-cost welcome gift for creating a registry. These boxes are usually full of goodies like bottles, pacifiers, clothes, toiletry samples, coupons, and more. Take advantage of those freebies! Stores also offer a registry discount code toward the end of your pregnancy to be used on items left on your registry. I would at least recommend doing Amazon, Target, and Walmart…even if you only add the essentials (like my favorite affordable low-tox diapers and wipes.) Send your universal registry to all your friends, but create a few others just for you to stock up on the savings.
Tips #3: You don’t need to register for baby books
Unless you really want specific books, I would avoid cluttering up your registry by trying to create a library. Instead, ask your guests to bring a book to your baby shower instead of a card. They can sign the inside cover or leave a note with it. Not only will you get a ton of books, you and baby will enjoy reading those notes for years to come. 🙂
Tip #4: Focus on necessities for the first 6 months
So many times I’ve seen new parents register for hundreds of items (not kidding) only to be disappointed when they realize they didn’t get many of the things they really needed and now have to fork out a good chunk of their own money to prepare for baby. Try to stay focused on what you really need for the first 6 months. There’s no need to register for toddler things- you can probably do that for their first birthday or Christmas.
Tip #5: Choose items that will grow with your child
Now, I know I literally just said to focus on the first 6 months, BUT – to get the most bang for your buck (or in this case, others buck) try to opt for items that will have a long lifespan. Some examples to consider:
- A baby carrier that has a higher weight limit for use into toddlerhood
- A crib that can be converted to a toddler bed
- A single-to-double stroller if you plan to have more kids close in age
- A multi-functional sound machine and nightlight.
- A convertible car seat
Tip #6: Don’t sweat it
Our consumer-driven society makes it seem like babies need SO MANY things, and I know creating a registry for the first time can feel super overwhelming. I hope you find a little peace in the reminder that brand new babies don’t really need that much- mostly just milk, clothes, a place to sleep, a car seat, and snuggles.
